Hot off the campfire

We are a family of meat lovers. The grill gets fired up every weekend, rain or shine. It can be a hundred and ten or twenty below - we have to get our fix! Steak, chicken, pork chops; every Saturday is a carnivore's dream. After ten years of marriage, I'm still getting used to it.

I grew up as the eldest of nine, and we were dirt poor. I could make a pound of hamburger serve the whole family for four meals straight, with creative use of spaghetti sauce, potatoes, rice and beans. I had never had a honest to God, home-grilled steak before I got married on my twenty fourth birthday to a real man: a hunting, fishing, red necked card-carrying member of the National Grill Masters Association. Let me tell you - it only took one juicy Porterhouse to have me firmly addicted.

Now, ten years and three kids later, we are firmly committed to keeping the cattle industry alive and well. Even our eighteen-month-old loves nothing more than sinking the twelve teeth he does have into a tiny portion of succulent rib-eye.

There's just one little problem.

I like garlic, and just a touch of pink in the middle. Hubby likes lemon pepper - and lots of it; and he doesn't freak about a little reddish juice on the plate. We both love Lee and Perrins. The kids don't share our passion for spice - yet - and theirs better be well done! When you have five steaks on the grill, it's kind of hard to keep track. You have to keep cutting them open, and trying to figure out which one is seasoned and which one isn't.

That's why I couldn't believe it when a friend turned me on to Grill Charms™ . She's a breast cancer survivor, and her hubby also is a member of the Grill Masters Club. At under $20 per six-piece Grill Charms collection, I might have to grab a few more sets for stocking stuffers - hubby and I have a lot of meat loving friends!

Does Vancouver torch look like a joint?

VANCOUVER–All hail – or inhale – the 2010 Olympic Torch.

Or, as it's jokingly known around Vancouver, the Olympic Toke.

Composed of stainless steel, aluminum and sheet moulding, the torch was designed to evoke snow, ice, skiing and skating, but to many, the metre-long white torch looks suspiciously like a marijuana joint, especially when lit.

The observation has become so common in this city that it's hard to know who was the first to say, "Hey, doesn't that look like ..."

But the torch's resemblance to British Columbia's biggest cash crop was evident right away to Jodie Emery, editor of Cannabis Culture magazine.

"A lot of people come to Vancouver because it's marijuana-friendly, so I think people who already enjoy a joint themselves will feel a little more kinship to the Olympics," said Emery, who ran as a Green party candidate in the provincial election this month.

"I'm sure the organizers didn't intend for it to look like a joint, but that's what a lot of people are seeing."

The association between toking and the Olympics didn't begin with the torch, of course.

At the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, Whistler skier Ross Rebagliati won, then lost, the gold medal in snowboarding after testing positive for marijuana. The medal was returned after Rebagliati explained he had inhaled second-hand smoke. And Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps was photographed in February smoking pot from a bong.

Industrial designer Mark Busse said he doesn't see a joint so much as a tweezer or scalpel.

"Sure, it may look a little bit like a joint, but I can tell you that what they were going for was ergonomics, sleekness, modernity," he said.

Suzanne Reeves, the Vancouver organizing committee's director of communications for the Olympic torch relay, said she has taken the torch across the country and people's faces light up when they get the chance to hold it.

At Nathan Phillips Square a couple of weeks ago, Reeves said she had the torch in a bag when a cyclist went by and did a double-take when he saw what she had.

Reeves said what she sees when she looks at the torch is the edge of snow and an unfurling flag.

"It's quite magical. Most people's reactions are emotional," she said.

The torch will be carried by 12,000 people over 45,000 kilometres as it makes its journey across Canada.

Because the torch will travel through the winter months, it had to meet some tough technical requirements, including being able to withstand high winds, cold temperatures and different altitudes.

The torch officially is meant to resemble the lines left behind by skiers and skaters on snow and ice.

Any double – or doobie – entendres, officials say, are purely unintentional.

British actress Lucy Gordon found dead in Paris

CANNES -- Young British actress Lucy Gordon was found dead in her Paris apartment Wednesday, just two days before her 29th birthday, French police confirmed Thursday.

Police said Gordon hanged herself, though gave no motive for the tragedy.

Born in Oxford, young model-turned-actress Gordon has starred in more than a dozen films, including Cedric Klapisch's "The Russian Dolls," Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3" and French title Yann Moix's "Cineman" soon to be released in Gaul.

The actress recently wrapped production on Joann Sfar's anticipated Serge Gainsbourg biopic "Serge Gainsbourg (a heroic life)," in which she plays Jane Birkin. "The film 'Gainsbourg (a heroic life)' owes a lot to Lucy Gordon's generosity, kindness and the immense talent," Sfar and the film's producers Marc du Pontavice and Didier Lupfer said in a press release sent out late Wednesday night in France. The film will hit Gallic theaters next year.

Rihanna battles nude photos controversy

It may not be clear if the nude pictures allegedly featuring Rihanna are genuine, but her people sure seem to be upset about them.

According to TMZ, Island Def Jam Music Group is cracking down on at least one website for posting the pics. Although the letter does not state the photos are of the 21-year-old Rihanna, it reportedly does not deny it either, the gossip website states.

The photos in question show different parts of a woman's nude body in a bathroom. At least two photos show a partially clothed woman who looks very much like Rihanna, although her face is partially concealed.

The pop star is noted for having several tatoos, none of which can be seen in any of the photographs. It isn't clear, however, exactly when the pictures were taken.

And this is the latest headline in Rihanna's skyrocketing career. The singer was recently caught in headlines after a photo of her battered and bruised face taken after an alleged fight with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown leaked. The legal battle over the incident is now in the California courts.

Kate Gosselin & Bodyguard Steve Neild Cheating Scandal, She’s Horrified

Kate Gosselin, of the popular TLC reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8, is horrified by the latest rumors of infidelity. This time it is Kate who is in the middle of a scandal, reportedly having an affair with her bodyguard and family friend Steve Neild.

According to the latest rumor mill, Kate has been engaging in an extra-marital relationship with a member of her security detail. He travels extensively with the family as they make public appearances and travels with Kate as she meets her schedule of media commitments across the country.

Jon Gosselin has been in the middle of his own fire storm with allegations of a three month affair with third grade teacher Deanna Hummel of Reading, Pennslyvania. Photos and video have fueled speculation that their relationship is more than just a friendship.

Kate and Jon have both spoken to the media about Jon’s issues, with Kate quick to point out that while she doesn’t necessarily believe the tabloid rumors, she does blame her husband for his “poor judgment” and “bad decisions”.

Now that the spotlight is shining on her, her emotions are running in high gear. She told People magazine, “The allegations they’re making about me are disgusting, unthinkable, unfathomable, and I am horrified.” That’s our Kate - the drama queen.

She is afraid that the family’s dwindling group of friends will turn away from them based upon the latest revelations. The paparazzi have camped out in front of the Neild household. Kate Gosselin lamented, “We opened our world to this but we had no idea we would potentially take down the people that we love around us.”
